25 Years of Super Mario
Mario is probably the most famous video game character of all who ever lived. The plumber from Nintendo has appeared in over a hundred games, and their sales account for several hundred million units. To celebrate its 25 anniversary, we review all securities platforms.
Mario. Who does not know Mario? Is probably the most famous fictional character of all who ever lived, or at least at the level of other celebrities such as Mickey or Pac-Man. The character, created by Shigeru Miyamoto that in 1981, spent some time the figure of a hundred games in which they appear, and their sales account for several hundred million units. However, the beginning of Mario in the video game world was a bit peculiar.
As we say, was the year 1981 in which Mario appeared in his first game, which he starred. Did not have his name yet, yes, for what was known as “Jumpman” (man jump). The title we are talking about was the recreational Donkey Kong, Then Mario was a carpenter, and development was based on reaching the top of the platform jumping levels while dodging obstacles had to be the gorilla Donkey Kong (character created by Nintendo while Mario as an enemy of this and that even today he continues to soldier on) pulled us from above. All this because, as a villain he was, had kidnapped Pauline, who was then the girl began as Jumpman. The curious thing is that the trio of characters-Mario, Donkey Kong and Pauline would not have been the protagonists of the game if Nintendo had done with the Popeye license, as Miyamoto’s idea was to use the most commercial Popeye , Brutus and Olivia in a game almost identical.
It is worth noting some details of this first creation of Mario and Miyamoto has been telling stories multiple times. For example, Mario jumped because the recreational platform which put the game called Radar Scope, had an action button which took advantage of something, and the jump was the most useful thing he could think of. For his part, when to recreate the character’s sprite, only had a field of 16×16 pixels, so he decided to put a cap so as not to encourage hair, a mustache to show some separation between the nose and chin, and a breastplate that would clearly distinguish the arms from the body. Not to mention its name, which comes from Mario Segali, owner of the first offices of Nintendo of America. Minoru Arakawa, president of the branch at the time, intended to replace the name of Jumpman one more commercial for the American market, and looked at the relationship between the character and Segali to be baptized with the same name.
The truth is that the game was very successful, selling for a while about 4000 machines per month and generating a profit of $ 280 million to Nintendo, so Miyamoto himself was commissioned to create a Game & Watch Donkey Kong, and later released a sequel in 1982, called Donkey Kog Jr., in which Mario was, first and only time in history, the main enemy of a game. Donkey Kong was kidnapped by him and the son of the gorilla had to be rescued in a title similar to the previous cut, for which there were three conversions to Game & Watch. Nintendo released Donkey Kong 3, but without Mario as the protagonist, and that after the success of the previous two games, Miyamoto had bigger plans for his character.
